The White House has warned state and local governments not to expect an immediate federal response to a nuclear attack for 24 to 72 hours, according to their planning guide.

President Obama, speaking at the two-day nuclear security conference said it would be a “catastrophe for the world” if a nuclear attack takes place. In the event of a nuclear blast many lives would be lost the day of the attack and days to years later as a result.

The US governments since the late 1960’s have not funded preparing US citizens for attacks in our country. Educating citizens to prepare themselves for attack have been little to non-existent.

In 1956 the United States developed the National Emergency Alarm Repeater (N.E.A.R) program during the cold war. The N.E.A.R. program installed siren warning systems and radio broadcasts in US cities to warn citizens in the event of a nuclear attack. This program went defunct around 1966.

American shelters were built in early 1960 in major US cities to provide a safe haven for thousands of people. This project was also discontinued in the late 1960’s.

Since the thought of “Common Good” is non-existent in our political parties, especially with many members of the Republican Party, Americans must now fend for themselves. Some of our wealthy Americans have homes built with nuclear shelters in case of an attack.

President Obama, has released a guide to state and local governments called, “Planning Guidance for a Response to a Nuclear Detonation.” This document has also been released to you in helping you prepare yourself and your family in the event of a nuclear attack. The guide from the White House provides Americans with more information about preparing for a nuclear blast.

No other President since Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1960) and John Kennedy (1961-1963) has done anything at this level to raise Americans awareness of nuclear preparation.

The two-day summit brought leaders of 47 nations together to discuss and develop plans on securing nuclear material from terrorist’s hands. Many leaders agreed and are now developing plans to secure nuclear material.

Matthew Bunn, author of “Securing the Bomb” said some nuclear material has already been stolen. Bunn says, nuclear theft is an ongoing reality.
